After the Solidarity for Chile party began its formation process at the end of last year, two weeks ago the Electoral Service enabled the community within its platform to begin recruiting militants.
With this, the deadline also began to obtain the 500 minimum memberships in each of the regions in which they are aiming to legalize initially (Maule, Ñuble and Biobío).
Solidarity for Chile (SOL Chile) has its origin in the confluence of different social actors who participated in the first Constituent process, and its objective is to “promote a profound transformation in the country towards a fully democratic, supportive, prosperous, safe and free social life.” , for present and future generations.”
They are currently led by the scientist and ecofeminist from Magallanes, Elisa Giustinianovich, and at the local level, the former conventionalist and socio-environmental leader, César Uribe, is in charge of leading the process of collecting signatures.
“We have almost seven months to be able to collect the 500 signatures we need in Ñuble, since we are committed as a party to legalizing ourselves with Maule, Ñuble and Biobío as priority regions. In Araucanía, a process is also going to be developed to try to legalize us there and in other regions, but the priorities are those three,” said Uribe.
Although these first weeks have been a bit complex, due to the holidays, the strategy that the party has adopted has been to contact the people close to us, and now in March go out into the streets.
“We want to inform regarding our proposal, what our objectives are, what differentiates us from the rest of the parties, why we are betting on forming a party, when in reality what the surveys indicate is what happens to us ourselves, that we feel a distance from political parties. That is also the main reason, that we do not feel closeness or reference to what exists today, that is why we are betting on creating something new,” he added.
The signatures will mainly be addressed from the Servel online platform, “because it is simpler, but in the same way it is possible to present the signature at a notary office, and in that sense, we are going to evaluate on the ground, when we go out to the street, if the possibility of doing it only digitally, with the Unique Code, which today is what the system allows, works,” said the former conventional, who announced that the idea is to have a point on the Paseo Arauco, in Chillán, and in other communes.
Will they compete in October?
Regarding whether they will be able to present candidates for the next regional and municipal elections, César Uribe stated that “we intend to be legalized, to find the signatures in our three priority regions between now and the end of April. We set an initial deadline, perhaps audacious, in a way, of being legalized in three months. It would be our most positive goal, our first victory, considering that it is not that simple. We hope, within some regions – not necessarily ours – where we legalize, to bring candidates. We also keep in mind the issue of primaries, there is an intention to try to contest primaries in some communes, which are not necessarily from our region,” he stressed.
In Ñuble, he said, “there are still no candidates. We intend to contest, to present candidates to the Regional Council, but our priority today is legalization and that is where we are also putting all our strength,” he expressed, not ruling out supporting some candidacies for councilors in some communes.
Apart from that, he stated, “we are seeing it as a very concrete and strategic possibility to present candidate(s) to the Regional Council and to be present in the Regional Council of the next period. I think that would also give us enough strength to make those links with the territorial organizations of different communes in the Regional Council, where there is also a direct relationship in the allocation of resources to these organizations. Therefore, we want to mark that link from the entire space, we see it as something strategic to address,” he stated.
