(CNN) — Irish actor Pierce Brosnan was fined $500 and must pay $1,000 in community service to the Yellowstone Forever Geological Fund for walking through thermal areas of Yellowstone National Park late last year, the Wyoming District Attorney’s Office reported.
Brosnan changed his statement this Thursday and a judge imposed the sentence, according to the court summary.
In January of this year, the actor who played Agent 007 in the movies pleaded not guilty to a citation issued on December 26 for “traveling on foot through all the thermal areas and through the Yellowstone Canyon, limited to the trails… and violating closures and usage limits,” CNN previously reported. The second charge of violating closures and use limits was dismissed without prejudice, the court record shows.
In an Instagram post published this Thursday, Brosnan indicated that he did not see a sign prohibiting access to a thermal area, but admitted having made a mistake.
“As an environmentalist I have the utmost respect and love for our natural world. However, I made an impulsive mistake—which I do not take lightly—by entering a snow-covered thermal area in Yellowstone National Park to take a photograph.” , reads the publication. “I did not see the ‘No Trespassing’ sign warning of danger nor did I walk in the area. I deeply regret my transgression and offer my sincerest apologies to everyone for invading this sensitive area. Yellowstone and all of our national parks must be cared for and preserved. for everyone to enjoy. #StayOnThePath.”
The Prosecutor’s Office had asked the court to sentence the actor to two years of probation and to pay a maximum fine of US$5,000, according to a press release from the United States Department of Justice.
Around Nov. 1, 2023, Brosnan posted photos of himself on his Instagram page standing over a hot spring at Mammoth Hot Springs, inside the park, a court document cited in the news release says. The court document does not appear in the public file of the case, and CNN contacted the US Attorney’s Office to obtain the document.
“There are signs posted in the area warning visitors of the dangers of thermal features and indicating that visitors should stay on designated boardwalks and trails,” officials said.
“The National Park Service (NPS) reminds visitors to Yellowstone that the soil in hot springs is fragile and thin, and boiling water lies just below the surface. Therefore, trespassing in hot springs is dangerous. and may harm the park’s delicate natural resources,” the Department of Justice statement said.
