The NEOS have also started the primary election campaign. Party leader Beate Meinl-Reisinger presented the content announcements for this year’s super election year on Thursday evening in Vienna together with her new book. In addition to many of NEOS’s well-known pink demands, Meinl-Reisinger also fleshed out the idea of an “opportunity account” for all 18-year-olds worth 25,000 euros and called for the “dismantling” of the social media companies.

In view of the current “toxic situation” with a crisis of trust and a “flagrant failure of leadership” in politics, a “pact of trust” is necessary to counteract social polarization, demanded Meinl-Reisinger in a keynote speech on the 20th floor of the Ares Tower in the Vienna Danube City. Specifically, the NEOS boss currently sees the middle of society in particular under pressure.

She accused the “complacent established parties” and their male colleagues at their leadership of “wasting their energy on fighting each other and not on finding solutions for the people.” “The identity politics of left and right are not getting us anywhere,” says Meinl-Reisinger.

What would be missing is the effort to find real solutions and a plan for a better future. The plan now presented by Meinl-Reisinger contains many well-known NEOS ideas such as reducing non-wage labor costs, reforming the pension system and a commitment to the European obligation to provide assistance. When it came to the pink heart issue of education, she upped the ante and called for the schools to be separated from the administration.

Their demand for a “civil right to education” includes, in addition to a legal right to a kindergarten place from the first birthday and a shared school until the age of 12, also earmarked state support for all young people aged 18 and over. An “opportunity account” should have 25,000 euros available for training, starting a business or buying your first home. In the event of a later inheritance, the money should be paid back. According to Meinl-Reisinger’s ideas, the whole thing should be financed by raising the retirement age by one year.

The NEOS boss harshly criticized social media in her speech, which she blamed for the “increasingly aggressive mood”. “We cannot make our democracy dependent on narcissistic tech billionaires,” said Meinl-Reisinger and called for competition policy measures to “dismantle” social media companies. When it comes to migration policy, she once once more called for a European solution, but also spoke out in favor of asylum procedures outside of Europe.

Meinl-Reisinger swore her party friends to the upcoming polls in this year’s election year. It is not a difficult time for liberals, as is often said. “The opposite is the case, it is exactly the right time for liberals” because liberal democracy is at stake. In addition to current political colleagues, the audience also included ex-LIF boss Heide Schmidt and the Ukrainian ambassador to Austria, Wassyl Chymynez.
