Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Flo. – Softball ended its Spring Break Trip getting its first win of the season, splitting its final day in Florida following taking down Wooster and falling to Swarthmore.
In the morning game once morest Wooster, Coast Guard came away with its first win of the season following defeating the Fighting Scots, 8-6, in nine innings.
CGA went up early, getting in two runs in the opening inning. Abriana Schmutz got things rolling with a single, advancing to second on an error. With a sack bunt by Natalie Beck, Schmutz was threatening at third. Christine Carey stepped up and singled to bring in the runner. Later in the inning, with two on, Julia Breidenthal brought home Carey to put the Bears up 2-0.
Coast Guard continued to get hits, but didn’t add another run until the top of the sixth. Bridget Bartz came home while Schmutz was caught stealing.
In the bottom of the sixth, Wooster tied the game up at three. With neither team scoring in the seventh, the game went into the eighth inning.
Coast Guard jumped back out in front in the eighth, adding two runs to go up 5-3. With two on, Breidenthal doubled to bring home Isabelle Shroyer and Lillia Farlow. In the home half, Wooster battles to tie it up once more and force the game into the ninth.
The top half of the ninth, the Bears went up three following Beck brought in one and Shroyer got home two.
Wooster got one back in the bottom, but Coast Guard shut them down from coming all the way back, getting the 8-6 win.
Dana Walker recorded two strikeouts, Schmutz went 2-3 at the plate, Carey and Shroyer went 2-4 and Farlow was 3-5.
Coast Guard was unable to carry the momentum into the second game, falling to Swarthmore with a final of 10-0.
The Garnet put at least one run in each of the first five innings, while the Bears struggled to make contact. After five, CGA was trailing, 10-0 and ended the game in five.
Coast Guard will next play at Rogers Williams on March 20th at 3 PM and 5 PM.
