Oliver Bearman has revealed that he received a “good luck” message from Formula 1 champion Sebastian Vettel before taking part in the 2024 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix as a substitute for Ferrari. With Scuderia Ferrari’s full-time driver Carlos Sainz requiring surgery for appendicitis, the team’s reserve driver and FIA F2 racer Bearman was selected as Charles Leclerc’s partner from FP3.

Bearman, a two-time Aston Martin BRDC Young Driver Award finalist, narrowly missed out on qualifying for Q3, finishing 11th. In the final, he made a series of skillful overtakes, including dummying RB driver Hiroki Tsunoda at Turn 1, and finished seventh in Jeddah with Leclerc. Bearman, 18, received many “good luck” and congratulatory messages over the weekend, including one from the former Ferrari driver and four-time F1 world champion, who will retire from racing for Aston Martin at the end of 2022. It also included a message from Vettel. “I got a lot of congratulations and good luch messages before the race,” Bearman said. “My favorite was from Sebastian Vettel. I’ve been a big fan of his since the early days. I always supported Seb until he retired, so the message from him was really “It was special.” “Knowing that he was watching over me gave me a bit of pressure in a way, but it was good pressure.” F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali also contacted me. “He sent me a really nice message following the race, which made me really happy,” Bearman said. “Lewis (Hamilton) also gave me a hug following the race. I was happy that he recognized my race. He said that being able to know his level was a big surprise from his cameo appearance. “What surprised me the most regarding the F1 weekend was the amount of administrative work. There’s more media work and more technical stuff than in F2,” Bearman said. “I was already preparing on the course in the followingnoon for the race starting at 8pm. The days were very long and it was a series of hard work. It was a surprise, but I was happy.” He also praised the precision of Ferrari’s simulator, which allowed him to adapt quickly to all in-car procedures and settings adjustments.
