On Sunday, Prime Minister Kaja Kallas wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter) that the plan to build the Haapsalu railway is not valid. However, according to regional minister Madis Kallas, preparatory works for construction will continue, ERR reported.

To ERR’s inquiry whether it can be concluded from the Prime Minister’s comment that the Haapsalu railway will not be built, Regional Minister Madis Kallas replied that the construction of the railway is very important from a regional political point of view and that preparations are underway for it. “The final funding has not yet been decided, while the preparatory work has continued,” said regional minister Madis Kallas.

According to Sander Salmu, Vice-Chancellor for Mobility of the Ministry of Climate, no decision has been made at the moment to continue with the construction of the Haapsalu railway, and no budgetary funds have been provided for this.

Earlier, regional minister Kallas said that the Haapsalu railway section from Turba to Rist is part of the mobility reform investment plan. The plan will be approved by the government at the end of the month.

The entire railway from Turba to Rohuküla has been designed and a construction permit has been obtained. Deforestation works are underway on the Turba-Rist section.
