Ahead of the holy month of Ramadan, residents of the Lapindo mudflow victims in Sidoarjo Regency are making a pilgrimage, praying for their families or relatives who have died. However, they carried out the pilgrimage on the embankment, because the burial area had been submerged by the overflowing hot mud of Lapindo.
The Lapindo hot mudflow in Sidoarjo Regency, which has occurred since May 29 2006, is currently still continuing to erupt. Even though the village area has been submerged in the hot mud of Lapindo, the affected residents still routinely make pilgrimages every time before the holy month of Ramadan.
The pilgrimage before Ramadan was carried out by residents of the Lapindo mudflow victims on the embankment, because the burial area had disappeared under the mud. Like the residents of Mindi Village, Renokenongo, Jatirejo, Siring and residents of other villages whose areas are submerged in Lapindo mud.
“Every year before the month of Ramadan, we make a pilgrimage on this embankment,” said Ahmad Tsabiq, 50, one of the pilgrims who used to live in Mindi Village, Porong Sidoarjo District, Sunday (10/30 followingnoon.
Even though it is carried out on the embankment, residents remain solemn in their pilgrimage. They pray for family or relatives who have died.
Apart from praying, the Lapindo victims also scattered flowers. They sprinkled flowers in the Lapindo mud pond.
“This has become our tradition every time before Ramadan, praying for our ancestors, family and relatives who have passed away,” said Muhammad Syafi’i.
Pilgrimage activities like this are usually also an opportunity for residents to stay in touch. Because the Lapindo victims have been relocated, and their lives are scattered in different places. (Z-1)
