Masterpiece animated film directed by Hayao Miyazaki“Spirited Away”. This work has received high praise not only in Japan but also overseas, and in 2022, it will be named Honorary Associate Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company,John CairdIt was adapted and directed, and was made into a stage play for the first time.
In the 2024 performance, the main character Chihiro will be played by Kanna Hashimoto, Mone Kamishiraishi, and Rina Kawaei and Momoko Fukuchi, who won the role in the audition. The show will open with Chihiro, played by Kanna Hashimoto, on Monday, March 11th, and Mone Kamishiraishi will appear on Tuesday, March 12th. Momoko Fukuchi will have her first day on March 13th (Wednesday), and Rina Kawaei will have her first day on March 27th (Wednesday). Let’s take a look at the general production held before the first day of Kamishiraishi.

Kamishiraishi’s Chihiro may seem absent-minded, but her strong will can be seen here and there. The scene at the beginning where Chihiro asks her father (Keisuke Horibe) and mother (Yuki Hana) to “let’s go home” shows that she is not only afraid but also cautious, and the bathhouse employees who initially viewed Chihiro as enemies quickly come to terms with her. He shows his adaptability and adaptability, making you feel like “this kid will be fine.” On the other hand, she also has a side that makes you think that she is going to do something reckless and keep an eye on her, and her balance of security and suspense makes her endearing. Her expressions in small scenes, such as the smile she shows to Haku, and the shy way she waves to Suswatari and the others, make me cringe.
Haku = Atsushi Masuko (GENIC)
Haku was played by Masuko, just like in the previous production by Fukuchi. The gap between his cool face and the kindness he shows to Chihiro remains, giving the impression that he is a boy who grows up with Chihiro who is strong at heart. Depending on what kind of girl Chihiro is, the image she receives from Haku will change greatly.
Harukaze, who plays the role of Yubaba, is strict, but has a deep heart, and manages the oil shop as a reliable manager. She gives the impression of class, and the way she flinches and panics at the words of Bo, who has grown up through adventures, is humorous and endearing. Kowa’s Kaonashi gives a strong sense of melancholy that makes you want to reach out for help, and Hana, who plays Rin, supports Chihiro as a lively and cheerful senior. Miyazaki, who played the role of Grandfather Kama, showed the warmth of an elder who watches over the events and young people around him. Musha, who played the role of Bo, and Igarashi, who played the head, both played well-characterized characters with a comical style that made you laugh even in tense scenes. He did a great job of creating the atmosphere of the original.
Yubaba/Zenaba: Hitomi Harukaze
Of course, the flow of the story and the lines are the same, but both the principals and the ensemble are unique in the details, and the relationships between the characters look different.
At times, Chihiro shows stubbornness and fortitude, and there are times when Yubaba, her older brother (Keisuke Horibe), her father (Toshihiko Ito) and other employees seem to be under pressure, and Kaonashi seems to be in a sad mood. Wearing it increases the warmth of the interactions with Chihiro and Zeniba. Yaoyorozugami and the employees who visit the bathhouse have slightly different impressions depending on the cast, so even if you know the story and the stage version, you can enjoy it with a fresh feeling. Expectations are high as to what kind of color the work will take on due to the characters played by the cast that were not seen in the production and the different combinations. I think it’s fun to compare how each cast member expresses their favorite scenes and lines.
Also, because a large and tall set covers the entire stage, what you see will change depending on your seat. Depending on the angle, people and things may appear and disappear like true magic, and you can return to your childhood and feel excited as you enter the world of “Spirited Away” and go on an adventure with Chihiro. Ta.
This work will be performed at the Imperial Theater in Tokyo until March 30th (Saturday), and then from April to June at the Misonoza in Nagoya, the Hakataza in Fukuoka, the main hall of the Umeda Arts Theater in Osaka, and the Sapporo Cultural Arts Theater in Hokkaido. Performances will also be held at hitaru. Furthermore, from April to August, it will be performed at the London Coliseum in England’s West End in parallel with the national tour. Let’s look forward to further progress in this work that is loved by many fans.
