Comprehensive violence prevention in Vienna is long overdue

Vienna (OTS) – In recent weeks there have been increasing reports of cruel acts of violence, mainly committed by young people. “The weapons ban called for by Interior Minister Gerhard Karner is an important proposal in the fight once morest crime in public spaces. Mayor Michael Ludwig’s positive statement also confirms that we in Vienna are particularly affected by violence and gun crime. It is also clear that we can only solve the major challenges with the joint cooperation of all constructive forces in our country – no action can be prevented with polemics and polarization a la FPÖ,” said state party chairman City Councilor Karl Mahrer.

Wiederkehr must finally take action once morest violence in schools

The federal government is showing this and taking measures once morest youth and gun violence. Vienna should follow this example and finally introduce comprehensive violence prevention at all compulsory schools in Vienna in order to combat one of the causes of violence escalation.

“For years, the Vienna People’s Party has been calling for, among other things, comprehensive violence prevention for all Viennese schools in cooperation with the police. City Councilor for Education Wiederkehr should finally stop with expensive individual projects and ensure violence prevention at all Viennese schools by involving the police. In addition, teachers should no longer be left alone. Case conferences are finally needed for problem students, as is also possible in the case of domestic violence. One thing is certain: we must now work across party lines on comprehensive solutions to prevent violence,” concluded Mahrer.
