The Superior Electoral Court (TSE) set up an Integrated Center for Combating Misinformation and Defense of Democracy (Ciedde) to operate during this year’s municipal elections.
According to the court, the unit will work to combat fake newshateful, discriminatory and anti-democratic speeches and the fight once morest electoral disinformation.
Ciedde will be chaired by Minister Alexandre de Moraes and will have the participation of other public bodies, such as the Attorney General’s Office (PGR), the Ministry of Justice and Public Security, the Federal Council of the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB) and the National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel).
Another task of the center will be to help the Regional Electoral Courts of the states to monitor the regular use of Artificial Intelligence tools by campaigns, including the fight once morest deepfakes.
The TSE says that Ciedde must act not only in a corrective manner, but also preventively, streamlining communication between agencies and social networks to take down malicious publications.
Ciedde must act to promote cooperation between the Electoral Court, public bodies and private entities, especially social media platforms and private messaging services, during the electoral period, to guarantee compliance with the rules established by the TSE plenary for the electoral propaganda – says the court.
The court must also guide campaigns on the new electoral rules that even allow the use of AI, but as long as this is identified in the electoral propaganda.
