Gunmen kidnapped 280 students from a school in Nigeria 2024-03-12 23:48:41

The children are all between the ages of 8 and 15, boys and girls, and with them the men also took a teacher. The incident is being recorded as the largest mass abduction of children in Nigeria since 2021. The police in the relevant Nigerian state are currently refusing to comment on the incident.

The armed jihadist group Boko Haram makes a habit of this practice of kidnapping children, who are usually released following a ransom is paid.

Amnesty International has called on the country’s authorities to act to save the students, while parents are also making desperate appeals. “We don’t know what to do, we wait and hope in God. It’s my two children who have been taken,” Fatima Usman told Reuters. Another parent reported that villagers tried to prevent the abduction of the children, but without success. He said that 17 of the kidnapped children are his own and expressed his sadness that the government has abandoned the area.

Mass abductions of children in Nigeria have become “epidemic”, especially in the north of the country. It is estimated that thousands of children have left school because of these events. The most recent abduction of children from a school was in July 2021, when gunmen raided a school and kidnapped over 150 children. Finally, the children were released, following their parents paid a ransom.
