On January 24, strange things happened at the Van der Valk hotel in Gosselies. For some reason, some customers literally “blew out”. Indulging in completely improbable actions, they tested the patience of their guests. Between astonishment and discomfort, what happened? Frédéric Legrand, actor Carolo enlightens us on the subject.
What happened last January at the Van der Valk Hotel?
“There was the filming of a series of hidden cameras, an episode of which aired last Thursday on RTL-TVI. The particularity is that these called on “ordinary” people. Some, chosen by David Antoine and Sandrine In, were called backstage. They were offered to be equipped with an earpiece and to return to the table to perform challenges in front of their acquaintances who were unaware of anything. Each challenge completed increased by one level. Whoever managed to complete the 5 challenges won 1,000 euros. Sophie Barbi and I had to intervene to create or support certain situations, we also guided via an headset. There were extraordinary challenges and people made incredible things that I’m going to let you discover. It’s still hard to believe it today.”

How did you end up in this adventure?
“I was contacted with Sophie Barbi by the production who had seen us on Télésambre doing sketches. It seemed to them that we knew how to disguise ourselves and position ourselves with the cameras. For the hidden cameras we had to manage several parameters. Be as normal as possible while having contact via an earpiece.”
How do we choose the “accomplices” and the trapped?
“Behind the scenes, the room was being observed and some might turn out to be good accomplices but of course it’s never safe. It worked very well and people really played the game.”
Are people easily fooled?
“Curiously yes. It’s a little more delicate for the younger generations who are trying to understand what is happening and who may have doubts regarding a possible “prank”. For the slightly older people there was no no problem. Clearly the bigger it is, the better it goes. Everything is done so as not to let anything show. People are far from suspecting that there is a real management team. There, the director Frédéric Van Hees was surrounded by the entire team . Almost undetectable technical means were also judiciously placed. For our part, we had to do everything to attract the attention of the trapped without too panicking the other customers of the restaurant.”

Do you have any anecdotes from filming?
“I have, of course. It starts with the end of the hidden cameras at the moment of the revelation. People go through a lot of emotions. Laughter, amazement, it took some people several long minutes to s ‘get over it. Another thing was above all not to be spotted. Fun fact, you had just come on the day of filming and I had to do everything to confuse you. (laughing). I also came across a couple from Gerpin that I knew and I had to be cunning not to be recognized even though I was a meter away from them. Another thing that amused me was the quality of the current dishes. It was expected that I would break objects and instead of them exploding on the floor, the plates and glasses were just bouncing around.”
Other hidden cameras at Van der Valk will still be visible on RTL-TVI and past episodes are still visible on RTL Play.
