watchOS 10.4: Finally fix for “ghost touch”

Owners of the Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 have been complaining for a long time regarding problems related to the touchscreen of their computer watches. This led to so-called “ghost inputs”, in which the watch accepted inputs on the screen that did not even occur in practice. In February, Apple requested further information from its repair partners in order to initiate debugging. Among other things, this resulted in the smartwatch making unwanted phone calls or not accepting the entry of the passcode following it was put on. There now seems to be a solution for this: As users of watchOS 10.4, which was released last week, report, the bug is no longer present.

Apple also provides corresponding information in the release notes for the update: “Fixes a problem that causes some users to incorrectly touch the display.” However, the company did not provide any further information regarding why the error occurred or what specifically triggered it. Those affected should install the update as quickly as possible, also because they various security gaps fixedsome of which are already being exploited by attackers.

It is also still unclear why the error apparently only affected the very latest Apple Watch models. The Series 9 and the Ultra 2 were introduced in September. The devices come with a faster system-in-package and include the so-called double tap function, which makes it possible to operate the computer clock with a finger gesture. This may have interfered with the touchscreen query.

watchOS 10.4 also makes the latest Apple computer watches more compatible with the Vision Pro. As is well known, this is often controlled by double tapping, which in turn might cause conflicts with the Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2. In the future it will be possible to deactivate the function as soon as you use a Vision Pro. Also new is the ability to use the command to display full notifications when their short form appears on the display.

watchOS 10.4 also fixes a bug where contacts were not syncing with the computer clock. Finally, the “Confirm with AssistiveTouch” function for Apple Pay has also been secured – it now requires you to enter the passcode.
