Airbnb has decided to ban surveillance cameras inside accommodation rented on the site, the company announced Monday, saying it wanted to protect the privacy of its customers.

The rental company previously allowed surveillance cameras in common areas like hallways or the living room, if they were clearly visible on the listing.

However, some customers have complained on social media regarding finding hidden surveillance cameras in their homes, and some in places where privacy is supposed to be respected.

Effective April 30

“This update is part of the platform’s efforts to simplify its policy relating to security cameras and other devices, and thus protect the privacy of the community of hosts and travelers,” declared the company based in San Francisco (California) in a message on its site.

This new policy, as well as the strengthening of the rules on outdoor surveillance cameras, will take effect on April 30, according to the company. “Our goal with these new rules is to provide the community with greater clarity on what they can expect on Airbnb,” said Juniper Downs, head of community and partnerships, as quoted in the post. .

Cameras on doorbells and decibel measuring devices will still be permitted by Airbnb to protect listings, according to the company. Regarding outdoor cameras, it will be mandatory to announce their presence and location before any reservation confirmation and they will not be allowed in certain areas, such as enclosed outdoor showers or saunas, the company added.
