In Salzburg- Liefering in the late followingnoon, a US military transport vehicle hit the trolleybus overhead line in the Schmiedingerstrasse motorway underpass. The truck tore down parts of the overhead electrical cable. The West Autobahn (A1) was closed in both directions; There were extensive traffic jams from around 5:30 p.m. Two trolleybus routes were closed for almost two hours.

According to the police, it was initially unclear what the two trucks, each loaded with containers, were transporting – a second US military transport truck was also on site.

It was later confirmed that it was ammunition or ammunition parts. Police and army forces arrived and a 500-meter exclusion zone was set up for security reasons. Police and army specialists determined relatively quickly that the contents of the containers did not pose any danger. It was not initially known why the two US Army trucks entered the Schmiedingerstrasse underpass.

Military transporter on the way to NATO exercises in Germany

As the SN learned, the two US trucks were coming from Slovenia on the way to a NATO exercise in Germany. According to a Federal Army spokesman, they had permission to transit through Austria. In the early evening the two ammunition transporters were guided to the Schwarzenberg barracks. On Tuesday they will be escorted to the German border by the Austrian military police.

According to police spokeswoman Karin Temel, it was a “property damage accident”.

The total closure of the A1 affected the section between the Bergheim-West exit and the Liefering tunnel. The highway and surrounding streets were only reopened shortly following 7 p.m.
