AFTER INFINITY is the new hot power metal band in Finland. Not that there doesn’t feel like there’s a new highlight in the genre every 14 days. In general, the Scandinavian country is a small hit machine and you always discover great troops, but for whatever reason, they don’t achieve great fame like some great ones.
The language is of course from bands like STRATOVARIUS, ARCTIC SONATA or NIGHTWISH, which definitely play a role in AFTER INFINITY. But it definitely plays an even bigger role DREAMTALEbut there’s a good reason for that, because guitarist and songwriter Zsolt Szilagyi has been a second-tier member of the Power Metal Heroes since 2019.
The self-titled debut, which also includes bassist Roi Partanen (EVERFROST) and Gideon Ricardo (WOODS OF WONDERS), who took care of the orchestration, sounds correspondingly mature and well thought out. The latter comes into its own wonderfully in the intro “Calm Before The Storm”, before the regular first track “I Surrender To You” sounds like a successful combination of the aforementioned bands. Catchy, heavy riffs meet a good pinch of bombast and haunting melodies. In general, a lot happens in the tracks of AFTER INFINITY. And so several singers can get involved. DREAMTALE colleague and ex-frontwoman of BATTLE BEAST Nitte Valo is just as motivated here as Mikael Salo (ex-DYECREST). Other guests come from FROZEN FACTORY, KING COMPANY and METAL DE FACTO.
In addition to opulent hymns with powerful choirs, fast bangers, progressive influences from DREAM THEATER and SYMPHON X, the debut doesn’t lack feeling either. Strings, subtle piano melodies and quieter passages always provide variety and the necessary contrast. But also dark tracks like “A Game Of Chess”, which also has a pinch RHAPSODY brings into play are not unusual and fit wonderfully into the overall concept. The whole thing is rounded off by a strong production in the Finnvox Studios, which shows off the band’s sound to its best advantage.
With their debut, AFTER INFINITY delivers the usual Finnish power fare, but on the other hand they also deliver new ideas and approaches that have been drawn from their many influences. Definitely an enrichment for the collection for fans of the playful fuel from the north.
