The Oscars’ big loser? Scorsese’s dramatic thriller “Killers of the Flower Moon” was snubbed in all categories.
History repeats itself. Four years ago, Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman” was nominated for 10 Oscars. It didn’t win a single one.
His latest film “Killers of the Flower Moon” was also nominated for 10 Oscars, but lost at the night’s gala.
The dramatic thriller regarding the murders in Osage County in the 1920s has been widely praised since its premiere in Cannes in the spring of 2023. But despite several nominations at award galas such as BAFTA and Golden Globes, the film has not managed to take home very many heavy prizes. Oscar night followed suit.
“Killers of the Flower Moon” had a chance for Best Film, Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design and Best Set Design, among other things, but was repeatedly beaten – often by “Oppenheimer” or “Poor Things”.
Neither Martin Scorsese nor supporting actor Robert de Niro were favorites in their respective categories, but many thought Lily Gladstone would win the statuette for Best Actress. It might be a historic moment for Native Americans, but the award went to Emma Stone.
81-year-old Hollywood veteran Scorsese, despite a 50-year film career, amazingly has only one Oscar on his bookshelf. He won it for the 2006 gangster film “The Departed”. Will it go better next time? Now he is planning a film regarding Jesus.
