  • WhatsApp is apparently introducing six new emojis soon. They are already usable in a beta version.
  • The six emojis are part of the new Unicode 15.1 emoji set.
  • Included are, among other things, two smileys that shake their heads.

There are now over 3,000 emojis in WhatsApp and Co. But that is apparently not enough. The messenger will soon be expanding its set with six new images. These are the emojis horizontal shaking of the head, vertical shaking of the head, phoenix, lime, brown mushroom and a broken chain.

What do these emojis mean and when should you use them?

  • Horizontal shaking of the head: You can use this emoji to symbolize your rejection. It stands for “no”.
  • Vertical shaking of the head: With this emoji you signal approval. It stands for “yes.”
  • Phoenix: The phoenix bird has different meanings depending on the culture, which often only become clear in conjunction with other emojis. For example, it can serve as a symbol of rebirth or female rule.
  • Lime: The lime emoji can represent the fruit itself, but can also represent freshness, spiciness or a sense of humor.
  • Brown mushroom: The brown mushroom can also represent a mushroom itself or be used as a symbol of spirituality and decay.
  • Broken Kete: The emoji can be used, among other things, as a symbol for freedom gained, but also for the fact that something is broken – such as a hyperlink.

You can currently only use the emojis if you are registered for the WhatsApp beta and have an Android phone. Because so far the new emojis are on the fan blog WABetaInfo only available in beta version 2.24.6.7 of Messenger for Android. In the next few weeks they should also be included in the final version.

The emojis mentioned were officially added to the emoji set by the Unicode Consortium in September 2023 and are now gradually being added to apps that use emojis. WhatsApp is therefore not the only messenger that is currently adding these emojis. Just a few days ago, Apple made this available in iMessage with the update to iOS 17.4.
