CARLOS Alcaraz opens up the opportunity to defend his title at the Indian Wells Masters following winning 6-2 and 6-3 over Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime, Monday (11/3).

The world number two tennis player from Spain did not give his opponent a chance so he advanced to the fourth round of the Indian Wells Masters following winning in just 77 minutes.

“My performance in this match was almost perfect,” said Alcaraz, who broke Auger-Aliassime’s serve four times. “I can move freely, appear aggressive, and make minimal mistakes.”

“This was my first match during the day and the conditions were much different compared to at night. The ball moved faster so I felt like I was competing in a different tournament,” he continued.

Alcaraz won the last five games of the first set and broke Auger-Aliassime’s serve early in the second to claim victory.

The win over Auger-Aliassime was good news for Alcaraz, who had failed to become champion following winning his second Grand Slam title by beating Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon final last year.

Alcaraz lost in the Australian Open quarter-finals and then in the Buenos Aires semifinals before suffering an ankle injury and withdrawing in the opening match in Rio de Janeiro. (AFP/Z-1)
