THE MINISTRY of Youth and Sports (Kemenpora) provides support with budget assistance to the Indonesian National Paralympic Committee (NPC) worth IDR 36.2 billion to prepare athletes for the 2024 Paris Paralympics.

Minister of Youth and Sports of the Republic of Indonesia (Menpora RI) Dito Ariotedjo said the signing of this agreement was clear evidence of the government’s commitment to improving sports achievements in the country.

“This time the scope of government assistance is very important in the selection of prospective athletes with achievements and prospective coaches, as well as assistance in the form of income from foreign trainers’ facilities in sports performance improvement programs,” said Dito in his statement (6/3).

The 36.2 billion Rupiah fund will be allocated for 10 disability sports projected for the 2024 Paralympics.

These include para-weight lifting amounting to Rp. 2.8 billion, para-athletics (Rp. 7.5 billion), para-badminton (Rp. 2.4 billion), para-swimming (Rp. 2.7 billion), para-table tennis (Rp. 6, 03 billion), para-boccia (Rp. 1.6 billion), para-cycling (Rp. 4 billion), para-shooting (Rp. 1.3 billion), para-archery (Rp. 4.4 billion), and para-judo (Rp. 3 billion) , A total of 51 athletes along with 10 coaches, 10 managers and 18 support staff are also included in the budget.

“With government support in the form of training assistance with qualification funds, we are entrusting these funds to the NOC so that these funds are managed with high accountability and ensure that everything is on target so that it has an impact on achievements at the upcoming Paris Paralympics,” said Dito.

“We hope that the NPC can qualify many athletes for the 2024 Paralympics. We also really hope that the Indonesian contingent’s medal tally will also increase and that the Indonesian contingent will shine in Paris later,” added Dito.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of NPC Indonesia, Senny Marbun, explained that so far 12 Indonesian athletes have been confirmed to qualify for the 2024 Paris Paralympics.

“The number of athletes who have qualified for the 2024 Paralympics is already 12 athletes. “Our plan is to target qualifying 27 athletes who are currently still taking part in the qualifying rounds so they can get points to qualify for the Paralympics,” said Senny.

“Indeed, current achievements have increased because we really know that in the era of President Joko Widodo, the existence of disability sports was strongly supported by President Jokowi. Before that, our achievements were actually mediocre because sport needed funds. “Well, in the era of President Jokowi it is extraordinary,” he added.

NPC Indonesia is targeting two gold medals at the 2024 Paris Paralympics. However, it hopes that this target can rise to the top or be able to win more than two gold medals.

“Regarding whether two gold medals can go up or not, I’ll talk regarding two gold medals first. Don’t dare to exceed God. Our target is two gold first. “If you can get five or more, that might be an extraordinary gift from God,” said Senny. (Z-8)
