Discovered by Zuzanna Navarová, Věra Bílá was very noticed in the Czech Republic and abroad from her first album released with the group Kale, Rom-Pop.

Newspapers such as The Guardian and Libération spoke of her as an exceptional talent and did not hesitate to use terms such as “star” or “diva”.

“She is a bohemian queen, a character that Fellini and Kusturica would have dreamed of portraying”wrote Les Inrockuptibles.

At a private concert at the White House, she sang for Bill Clinton and sold out concert halls like the Olympia in Paris.

Bílá sang in Romani, Czech and Slovak. For many years, she was associated primarily with the group Kale, with whom she performed in 26 countries around the world, although she did not like to travel, especially because you might not smoke on a plane.

Her manager Jiří Smetana tried hard, but she lost most of the money she earned in slot machines.

“One of the greatest talents in Czechia”

The task is not easy for Jiří Smetana. He organizes concerts at the Royal Opera of Madrid or at Carnegie Hall. But the singer canceled the dates for different reasons, and even the concert in the famous New York venue was canceled.

“He was one of the greatest talents in Czechia. She had all the prerequisites except one, but terribly important, which was hard work and reliability.”, wrote music critic Jiří Černý five years ago, when Bílá died on March 12, 2019 at the age of 64. Ill, in debt from a life spent gambling, she ended her life alone in a cheap dormitory and died of a heart attack in Plzeň hospital. She is buried in the cemetery of Rokycany, her hometown.
