About the Roman Stadium of Patras

The Roman Stadium of Patras began to be revealed in 1972, regarding 100m west of the Odeon. Its eastern side, which is better preserved, came to light gradually following the demolition of the houses that were located to the west of the square of Ag. Georgiou and up to Hephaistou Street. This part of the Stadium can be visited today, following fixing and shaping the area. The western long side, between the streets Al. Ypsilantou and Karaiskaki, was narrower than the eastern one.

The monument has an elongated shape with a NE-SW orientation and a total length estimated at 200m. The length of the arena is 170m, and its width between 30 and 36m. Along the eastern long side were two or three diazomes. Below the stands there were rows of roofs, which served the needs of the Stadium.

Based on historical sources and archaeological data, it seems that the Stadium must have been built in the last quarter of the 1st century. A.D. Probably its construction was related to the celebration of the centenary of the Roman colony here (Colonia Augusta Achaica Patrensis) in 86 AD. Artistic (theatrical, musical) and athletic competitions took place at the monument, as well as gladiatorial contests and animal fights
