After a mixed World Cup in Scandinavia, Hungary’s women’s handball players will soon have it in their hands to buy tickets for the Olympic Games in Paris in front of their home crowd.
A qualifying tournament for the last remaining places at the 2024 Olympic handball tournament in France will take place in Debrecen, eastern Hungary. The Hungarian association was able to prevail with its application once morest its rival Japan; Sweden and Cameroon had not submitted a tournament application. The four-person tournament will take place from 11th to 14th. April in the Debrecen Főnix Arena. Two teams from the quartet can still qualify for the Olympic Games.
It was only at the beginning of December that Hungary met Cameroon in the preliminary round (39:20) and Sweden in the main round (22:26). The Hungarian handball players were unable to gain any experience with Japan, but the Asian women’s 17th place in the World Cup is rather misleading. Japan only lost to Germany and Poland by a very narrow margin in the preliminary round (30:31 and 30:32 respectively), only to then cause one of the biggest sensations of the World Cup in the main round once morest co-hosts Denmark (27:26).
In addition to Hungary, Germany also has to qualify for the World Cup as sixth place: Montenegro, Slovenia and Paraguay are the opponents in Neu-Ulm.
