The Bosscha Observatory TEAM, Lembang, West Bandung Regency, will carry out observations of the new moon that determines the start of Ramadan 1445 Hijriah next Sunday (10/3).
“Observation of the new moon on March 10 2024 starts from morning until the moon
“setting on the western horizon,” said Bosscha Observatory Researcher, Yatni
Yulianti, Thursday (7/3).
He explained that the observation activities of the crescent moon were carried out by the Observatory team
Bosscha is aimed at researching the visibility threshold (appearance) of the moon
as a function of elongation relative to the thickness of the lunar crescent.
The observation of the appearance of the young crescent moon, continued Yatni, is commonly referred to
rukyatul hilal. From the results of observations of the young crescent moon, it will later become a reference for determining the beginning of the Hijri month.
“The crescent of the moon that appears following sunset on that date is known as the hilal,” he said.
The observations will be assisted by a 106 mm diameter refractor telescope equipped with a Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) based camera detector.

“The images captured by the telescope are then processed by the device
image processing to improve the quality of the lunar crescent display.
This software was developed independently by researchers at
Bosscha Observatory,” he said.
Furthermore, observing the new moon at the Bosscha Observatory is one of 134 observation points spread throughout Indonesia.
The results of these observations will later be submitted to the Ministry
Religion (Ministry of Religion) as a reference for determining the start of Ramadan through the Isbath session.
His party is only tasked with conveying the results of calculations, observations and
research regarding the new moon to the authorized government unit if
required as input for the Isbat session by the Ministry of Religion.
“The results of the new moon observations will later become input for the Ministry of Religion
in the implementation of the isbat session to determine the start of fasting or 1 Ramadan 1445
Hijri,” he explained.
