The Piraeus team experienced a heavy home defeat by Maccabi Tel Aviv 4-1 and basically said goodbye to the Conference League in the round of 16, since it is very difficult for the “red and whites”, with such an image, to beat the Israelis by a margin four goals next Thursday (March 14, 22:00) in Serbia, at the home of Backa Topola.

The start was a nightmare for Olympiakos, who found themselves losing 2-0 before the tenth minute was even completed, with the bewildered “red and white” not having understood what had happened. The organized and methodical Israelis exposed all the problems of this year’s team, who came into the game cocky following their last consecutive successes but all they managed to do was prove that the last wins had swept the problem under the carpet.

Olympiacos tried to play aggressively but Maccabi was not Ferencvaros, neither in team level nor in tactics. The guests expected to find the spaces and found them, as the opponent generously offered… airstrips. Bad suspension function in the midfield, zero in the returns and in the interception, Rodenei excelling and that’s how the 0-2 froze Faliro.

The irony, in fact, is that the Olympiakos coach had pointed out to his players how dangerous the team from Israel is when it unfolds from the edges but… he said it and he heard it, as his players poured out from the start in a reckless attack, they took risks and Maccabi punished them.

It wasn’t until the 5th minute that Milson made a pass from the right that didn’t seem to have any luck, but the ball mysteriously passed under Ese’s feet and past Retso, “butter to the bread” of the versatile Zahavi who “executed” from the heart of the region Paschalakis for the 0-1.

Four minutes later Maccabi struck at the other end, from Ortega’s side. Due to a mistake in the midfield area and not immediately recovering, Peretz made the shot from inside the area, Paschalakis blocked temporarily but Sahar, unmarked at the height of the penalty among the entire defense of Olympiakos (!), took the rebound and scored the 0-2.

In the 13th minute, the “red and whites” reduced with El Kaabi’s header from an excellent cross by Fortunis at the second post and gave hope to their audience, which were quickly denied. It was also the only time in the first half that the Moroccan striker got the ball right, as his team-mates were unable to pass it to him properly and take advantage of his demonic form.

After half an hour of play, Maccabi reached 3-1, with the phase starting once more from Rodney’s side. The Brazilian chased down Milson with the speed of a… veteran, he easily passed him on the byline (!) and turned to the unmarked Zahavi, who made it two of his personal goals of the game.

This is how the half ended, with the Piraeus team continuing to have bad distances between their lines and being vulnerable in the transition game. Also apparent is the lack of automation, but these are things that are being worked on months in advance.

Even so, at 45+1 the home team had a chance to reduce, when the Portuguese trio of Pontense, Horta and Ciquinho combined, with the latter’s shot sending the ball past Mispati’s left post.

A new, very big chance for 2-3 was missed by El Kaabi in the 54th minute, following Horta’s impressive solo between three players and the pass to the Moroccan, who was beaten in the four by the Maccabi goalkeeper. And while Olympiacos seemed to be in control of the game but didn’t get any chances, the guests also scored a fourth goal in their only final in the second half (!), a typical element of the home team’s suspension poverty.

It was the 74th minute, when in a phase where the ball went around the area of Olympiakos without anyone being able to make a simple chase, at least, the cross went out for the once more unmarked Peretz, who a little further from the penalty spot defeated with a header for exposed for the umpteenth time tonight Easter.

And because luck had completely turned its back on the Greek team on Thursday night, in the 89th minute Carvalho saw the very nice shot that he tried to end up on the post, 4-1 staying until the end and the rematch next Thursday in Serbia to become, as of today, standard processing.
