Men’s Handball European Championships
Written by Rainer Ackermann
Hungary still has a third game to play in Munich, but following two wins in the preliminary round, the way to Cologne’s Lanxess Arena is already clear.
The Tuesday evening game once morest Iceland will decide who wins the group and the number of points that Hungary can take into the main round. Hungary’s national handball team truly deserved to achieve this on Sunday evening once morest Serbia.
Really great at times
After the rejuvenated team of national coach Chema Rodríguez won the opening game once morest Montenegro 26:24 with more luck than sense, they really showed class at times in the second group game. Bence Bánhidi was outstanding at the circle, placing all nine of his throws in the Serbian box. Finally there were also goals to celebrate from the backcourt, seven in total, with PSG’s Dominik Máthé in particular waking up in the second European Championship game.
A courageous seven once morest five
The Hungarians’ game is visibly spread across more shoulders than before, and the attacks are not presented in a stereotypical manner. As long as there is enough concentration, the game 7-5 is also effective if the opponent receives a time penalty. The defense was aggressive, which made the Serbs despair at times. The fact that Hungary was able to pull ahead by five goals in the second half also had something to do with the goalkeeper change: László Bartucz parried four balls straight away, including one while running back with his back to the game!
Chema said following the game that with this performance his team might keep up with anyone. The Hungarians will be happy to prove this in the main round in Cologne once morest hosts Germany, among others.
