TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Ball State baseball team jumped on Florida A&M in each game of a doubleheader on Wednesday evening on its way to a midweek sweep over the Rattlers.
The Cardinals (9-4) scored nine runs in the first five innings of the opener, which they won 10-2 over the Rattlers (5-8) before crossing the plate six times in the first two innings of the 6-4 nightcap triumph.
“Our boys hit the ball well, and we played a lot of guys to earn these two wins,” head coach Rich Maloney said. “It truly was a team effort. We have a lot of work to do but 9-4 is a good start.”
Game 1 – Ball State 10, Florida A&M 2 (7 innings)
Blake Bevis was perfect at the plate and Keegan Johnson threw 5.0 quality innings to lead Ball State to the 10-2 decision.
The sophomore Bevis went 3-for-3 with a home run, walk, two RBI and four runs scored, nailing a solo shot to spark a four-run fourth inning rally. The Cardinals tallied a single run in the first inning on a
Michael Hallquist solo homer and two in the second on RBI singles by Matthew Kamins and Nick Gregory.
FAMU responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third, but the big fourth inning and later RBI safeties by Bevis in the fifth and Nick Gregory in the seventh created separation for the visitors.
Johnson (1-0) struck out four while allowing five hits and two runs to earn his first collegiate victory. Nate Blain and Ty Bradle followed with a scoreless inning each to close out the game. FAMU’s Dallas Tease (0-1) was saddled with the loss following allowing five runs in 3.1 frames.
Game 2 – Ball State 6, Florida A&M 4 (7 innings)
Decker Scheffler and Hallquist had big games at the dish and the Cardinals’ bullpen game came through for sweep-clinching nightcap victory.
Scheffler went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI while hitting the first triple of the year for Ball State. Hallquist had a pair of knocks and RBIs to up his season average to .380 and RBI count to 15.
The junior transfer got the scoring started in the first on an RBI single that brought home Scheffler before crossing the plate himself on a Hunter Dobbins sac fly.
Korbin Griffin, Scheffler and Hallquist pounded out RBI singles in the second inning to provide the Cardinals pitching staff all the offense they would need for the rest of the game.
Zach Kwasny (3-1) struck out five and allowed one run in 2.0 innings for the win, while Tanner Knapp pitched a scoreless seventh for his third save of the year. The Cardinals put six runs on Rattlers pitcher Raylan Wagner in 2.0 innings to hand him the loss.
