Pimps are using Instagram to recruit minors and push them into prostitution 2024-03-06 21:43:05

Over the past year, the British Media has been monitoring Instagram accounts that hosted content that supported such activities.

Spotted accounts often use hashtags and catchphrases that refer to sex work to make it easier for interested customers to find them.

They promoted the abuse of women, with calls for slapping, beating, choking and deprivation of food, while in many accounts the women were described as ‘bitches’ and prostitutes.’

As a result of the Guardian’s investigation, Meta shut down some Instagram accounts and restricted the search for hashtags and emojis associated with pimp accounts, which were used in more than 350,000 posts.

Meta’s sexual exploitation policy provides for the removal of content that depicts, threatens, or promotes sexual violence, sexual assault, or sexual exploitation of adults.

“We have created a culture in which ‘pimping’ is glorified – in which exploiters who perpetrate this heinous form of violence and control are seen as people worthy of emulation,” said Lisa Goldblatt Grace, executive director of My Life, My Choice, an organization which supports survivors of sexual exploitation in Boston.

During the investigation, the Guardian also found that convicted child traffickers were using Instagram to promote their activities.

One of the pimps who used Instagram to attract girls has been sentenced to 27 years in prison. It is regarding 25-year-old Arion Jackson, who recruited prostitutes, forced them into prostitution and even forced them to make at least $1,000 a day.

Jackson would “advertise” his victims to prospective clients through Instagram stories and they would show interest by sending private messages.

The 25-year-old did not hide their activities and even uploaded on his Instagram page with banknotes and wrote that “(a girl) took out her own money today”.

Another man, convicted of child sexual exploitation in 2022, advertised the sexual services of girls as young as 14 through Instagram and Instagram Stories.

Kevondric Fezia, 28, forced his victims to pose in their underwear in hotel rooms, with their location visible so that interested parties might go.

Fezia was sentenced to 27 years in prison in 2022, while his accomplice, Calista Winfrey, was sentenced to three years.
