Sifan Hassan missed out on a hat-trick in the marathon on the night from Saturday to Sunday (Dutch time). The Dutchwoman finished in fourth place in Tokyo.
Hassan recorded a time of 2:18:05 and had to tolerate three African runners in front of him. Ethiopia’s Sutume Asefa Kebede won in a time of 2.15.55. Kenya’s Rosemary Wanjiru was second in 2.16.14 and reigning world champion Amane Beriso of Ethiopia was third in 2.16.58.
The 31-year-old Hassan caused a sensation last year by immediately winning the major in London in 2.18.33 on her marathon debut. In October, following an impressive solo, she triumphed in the Chicago marathon in a European record of 2.13.44. It is still the second fastest time ever run.
In Tokyo, Hassan was in the leading group from the start, but following 28 kilometers the two-time Olympic champion (5,000 and 10,000 meters) might no longer follow the leading runners. Gradually her gap grew and following 35 kilometers the time difference had already increased to one minute.
While Hassan made up for a deficit with the leaders in London in the final phase and even won the race, she was no longer able to accelerate in Tokyo. She crossed the finish line in the Japanese capital two minutes later than winner Kebede.
In the men’s marathon, the marathon turned out to be a fiasco for two-time Olympic champion Eliud Kipchoge. The Kenyan, still the only man to complete the marathon under two hours in an unofficial race, had to drop out of the leading group halfway through and finished tenth in 2.06.50. The win went to Kenyan Benson Kipruto (2.02.16).
