Havana Electric Company warns of blackouts in a block “if necessary” 2024-03-06 17:42:35

Residents of Havana, Cuba, have once once more experienced blackouts due to the “contingency” in the country’s electricity generation.

The Havana Electric Company informed its customers that, due to the deficit in generation capacity, it was necessary to turn off Block No. 2 yesterday between 10 am and 2:00 pm.

The entity has announced that if the conditions of the National Electrical System (SEN) require a blackout today, it would correspond to Block No.3. The company assures that will maintain timely communication through its Telegram channel and institutional profiles.

For this March 5, another difficult day is expected in Cuba. According to the Electrical Union, an availability of 2,040 MW is estimated and a maximum demand of 3,150 MW for peak hours, which represents a deficit of 1,110 MW. If the expected conditions are maintained, an impact of 1,180 MW is forecast during this time.

Several units of the Thermal Electric Power Plants (CTE) are out of service due to breakdowns or maintenance, and 101 distributed generation plants and the Santiago de Cuba lake are out of service due to lack of fuel, adding up to a total of 877 MW. In addition, there are 9 plants with low coverage (61 MW), reported Featured.

“SOLIDARY” BLACKOUTS IN HAVANA

In July 2022, during an Economy Plenary held by the Government of Havana, it was announced that the electricity service would also begin to be cut in the capital, as in the rest of the island.

The Havana government authorities defined this measure as “a gesture of solidarity with the country,” although they made it clear that the inhabitants of the Cuban capital would not experience nighttime blackouts or electricity cuts of more than 4 hours.

However, despite the general rule of not affecting the country’s capital for fear of complaints, they have had to do it once more, although maintaining “special” conditions in terms of hours and duration of the cuts.
