  • On Tuesday, a missile hit a ship belonging to the Swiss company MSC.

  • A fire on board the MSC Sky II was quickly extinguished.

  • The crew remained unharmed in the rocket attack.

Yemeni Houthi fighters attacked the Liberian-flagged, Swiss-owned container ship MSC Sky II en route to Djibouti on Monday. The MSC Sky II, operated by MSC Mediterranean Shipping Co., was regarding 91 miles (146 kilometers) southeast of the Yemeni city of Aden when it exploded, according to the British Navy. According to US information, the Houthis fired two rockets, one of which hit the ship.

MSC ship has resumed its journey

A fire broke out on board, which was then extinguished by the crew, as the Keystone-SDA news agency writes. No one was injured in the attack. The ship continued its journey.

For months, the Houthi rebels have repeatedly attacked merchant ships and occasionally warships with missiles from the areas they control in Yemen. The damage to the ships is often minor or the missiles miss their targets completely.

Mega environmental catastrophe looms

The Rubymar is an exception. The cargo ship, registered in Great Britain, was hit by missiles on February 18th and sank at the beginning of March following the crew left the damaged ship. Shortly following the rocket hit, large amounts of oil poured out of the ship. In view of the 40,000 tons of fertilizer on board the ship that has now sunk, various governments are warning of a major environmental catastrophe. According to the International Maritime Organization, phosphate fertilizer is a “highly dangerous good”.
