Cleaning the Motagua River requires an investment of US$1 billion, says EU diplomat

The director of the European Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, Félix Fernández Shaw, met with Vice President Karin Herrera to discuss projects in which the international entity can invest in Guatemala following the tour that President Bernardo Arévalo had in Europe .
The group that visited the country is made up of representatives of Member States of Germany, France and Spain, together with development banks of the European Union and the European Investment Bank, who seek to invest in projects related to electricity, internet, connections and infrastructure. .
“It is supporting the government in the new political situation that Guatemala is experiencing because we think it is an opportunity for everyone and also for the European Union Guatemala,” commented Fernández Shaw.
One of the projects of greatest interest is the cleaning of the Motagua River basin, for which it would be necessary to make a public-private alliance in which at least US$1 billion dollars are invested, the official said.

“It is not a problem of money, it is a problem of joining the efforts of everyone who has money and contributing to the financing from the families who have to think regarding having to pay for a service for garbage collection to the government, Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the European Investment Bank and foreign investors,” he emphasized.
He added that there are some international entities that are preparing an investment for a wastewater treatment plant, water treatment plants and recycling plants.
The European Union showed its support for the new government during the transition period, when President Arévalo insisted that a coup d’état once morest him was being planned.
