Hungary’s president signs resolution for Sweden to join NATO

As the first official act, the new Hungarian President signed the law on Sweden’s NATO membership. Hungary After a long delay, the last NATO country to approve Sweden’s entry into the defense alliance through a parliamentary resolution on February 26th.

With this vote, the right-wing national government party Fidesz gave up its boycott once morest Sweden, which has been ongoing since 2022. Ratification is only completed with the presidential signature and subsequent publication in the Hungarian Official Gazette. Now the accession protocol from Budapest only needs to be brought to the US State Department in Washington and deposited there to formally complete the Scandinavian country’s accession.

Successor to Katalin Novak

The 67-year-old Sulyok was elected last week with a two-thirds parliamentary majority from the right-wing national ruling party Fidesz. The current President of the Constitutional Court succeeds Katalin Novák, who had to resign as President. The 46-year-old pardoned a man who had been convicted of aiding and abetting the sexual abuse of minors.
