Birth crisis in Cuba, in the year 2023. Last year, the island registered its worst birth record in six decades, according to government sources.

Cuba faces an unprecedented demographic crisis. The year 2023 has recorded the lowest birth rate in the last six decades, with around 90,300 births, as reported by the authorities during a meeting of the Government Commission that addresses the matter.

“The Cuban population maintained the trend of aging and natural decrease,” states a report from the presidency’s press team. In fact, older adults are the only population group that has grown in recent years in the country.

The authorities, although they recognized their concern regarding the problem, did not announce concrete actions to reverse the trend. Instead, they limited themselves to mentioning the need to review the situation and think regarding strategies.

Low birth rate in Cuba: Who wants to give birth in the middle of a crisis?

In this regard, the Cuban Prime Minister, Manuel Marrero, pointed out that “in this scenario, a change of mentality is required in the understanding, attention and control of the country’s demographic situation. Solutions must be sought from local resources, and indicators that reflect progress and deficiencies must be monitored.” He insisted that it was something “priority” for his government, although they did not say how to reverse this situation.

“We talk regarding Government projections to correct distortions, and here there are many distortions, and re-boosting the economy in this matter is fulfilling everything we have proposed, because all this directly impacts the population,” he added.

The deep economic crisis that Cuba is going through is having a direct impact on the country’s birth rate. More and more women are postponing pregnancy or not directly contemplating having children due to difficulties in accessing decent housing, food, medicine and other basic products.

The migratory exodus of the last three years has also left a negative balance on the country’s demographic situation.
