The Japanese Space Agency (JAXA) announced today that the Japanese probe (Slim), which has been on the surface of the moon since the end of last January, has been placed once more in a dormant state, awaiting its reactivation during this month.
The agency reported on the X platform that the Slim probe, which was reactivated on February 26, was once more put into hibernation following it succeeded in passing the lunar night that lasted for two weeks.
The agency added: “The risk of failure increases due to large changes in temperature, but we will try to reactivate Slim when the light returns during the month of March.”
On the 20th of last January, the “Slim” probe, which is the first English letter for the phrase “smart lander for exploring the moon,” succeeded in landing at a distance of 55 meters from its designated target, making Japan the fifth country to succeed in placing its vehicle on the surface of the moon. .
The agency indicated that a problem occurred in the engine in the last few tens of meters before landing, which led to “Salim” settling on the surface of the moon at a curved angle, and thus its photoelectric panels facing west were not receiving sunlight, as the probe landed in a small hole with a diameter of less than 300 meters called (Shioli) was able to launch the two miniature vehicles he was carrying.
These two vehicles are supposed to conduct analyzes of rocks coming from the internal structure of the moon known as the lunar mantle, regarding which not much data is yet available.
