This was reported by the City Tourism Working Group. The share of the largest municipalities in Austrian tourism also corresponds once more to the pre-crisis value. Specifically, 25.7 million overnight stays were recorded in the nine cities in 2023. This means an increase of 27 percent compared to 2022. Based on 2019, the results were only one percent below the previous results. The share of overnight stays in the capital was 17 percent of the total. According to ARGE City Tourism, this is exactly the value that was calculated in 2019.
Around two thirds of the overnight stays in the capital were counted in Vienna in 2023. They were followed by Salzburg, Innsbruck, Graz, Linz, Klagenfurt, Bregenz, St. Pölten and Eisenstadt. Klagenfurt made the biggest jump compared to 2019. The numbers there were exceeded by 15 percent. Innsbruck, Graz, Linz and St. Pölten also recorded increases. Bregenz, Eisenstadt as well as Vienna and Salzburg remained below pre-crisis levels.
“Last year was all regarding catching up”
“The previous year was all regarding city tourism catching up. It found its way back to its long-standing role as a driver of value creation, a driver of innovation and a guarantee of year-round jobs,” said Vienna’s tourism director Norbert Kettner in his role as chairman of the ARGE. He emphasized that there is hardly any segment of Austrian tourism that relies more heavily on an international audience.
