As expected, sprinter Karin Strametz was eliminated in the semi-finals of the 60 m hurdles on the final day of the World Indoor Championships in Glasgow. The Styrian, however, reduced her personal record by three hundredths to 8.00 seconds on Sunday, meaning the 25-year-old narrowly missed out on a ticket to the final in 13th place. As fifth in her run, Strametz was only five hundredths shy of a top-8 finish. In the final, Devynne Charlton from the Bahamas improved her world record to 7.65 seconds.
“I’m very happy with the run. I certainly missed the one hundredth that was missing from a 7s time on the first two hurdles,” said Strametz, looking confidently into the coming months. “I know where I still have potential for the future, that and the good times make me very confident for the outdoor season.” Only Beate Schrott was even faster in 2013 in 7.96 seconds.
The ÖLV athletes were able to draw a positive conclusion at the end of the World Championships. Sprinter Susanne Gogl-Walli took sixth place in the 400 m final on Saturday with a new ÖLV record; the day before, all-around athlete Verena Mayr came fifth in the pentathlon, scoring valuable points for Olympic qualification. Sprinter Markus Fuchs also left Scotland with a new personal best over 60 m and a tenth place.
“The team delivered absolute top performances in the finals and semi-finals in the form of many best performances and records,” said sports director Gregor Högler with satisfaction. “Everyone showed that they are absolutely world class in the core sport of all Olympic sports. I am proud of the entire team and might already feel the Olympic spirit. The outdoor season can come.”
