The hardest part is often getting over the hump: recognizing that you have a health problem because you are overweight or obese. “At Théraé, we don’t talk regarding diet. We learn to eat in a healthy way but without depriving ourselves, we work on appropriate physical activity to regain muscle massexplains Christine Delasalle, director of Théraé. And in recent months, we have developed a well-being and self-confidence component which are essential in order to change your habits in the long term, which is the hardest part. »
The clinic, located in La Chaussée-Saint-Victor and bought almost three years ago by the Colisée group, receives patients referred by their treating doctors, hospitals in the department but also in Tours and Orléans. The care is provided by the CPAM and the patient’s mutual insurance company, because it is indeed curative care. “We have the feeling that obesity has become normal, we can live with it, people do not feel sick and we forget the consequences on health which are serious, cardiac, pulmonary, etc., the numerous complications. Obesity can be discriminatory, here we don’t judge, we try to understand why the person got there. »
“Regain self-confidence to accept yourself”
For this, the clinic, which has 38 adult beds and 16 for adolescents with obesity, has developed its outpatient component since the Covid crisis. Day hospital activity increased fourfold last year, i.e. 4 places, 2 adults and 2 adolescents. “We work full days or half days from Monday to Saturday, this allows people who work, who have children, to be taken care of more easily, explained Christine Delasalle. This was an opportunity to add the self-confidence and well-being component to nutritional care and adapted physical activity. »
With the Parenthesis association in particular, Théraé works on colorimetry, relaxation, laughter yoga, singing, art therapy. Practices used until now more for patients suffering from cancer. An occupational therapist was hired. “ Four times a year we added a week dedicated to self-confidence, with our psychologist and a sex therapist. It works quite well, the patient opens up and accepts himself as he is. » Photo sessions are organized, with a photographer who has had a background in care, a makeup artist who is a former nurse, forever “stay empathetic”. The idea is to trigger processes, because patients will then have to apply the nutrition and lifestyle principles learned from professionals on a daily basis at home alone. And there lies the most difficult bet to keep.
More and more complex obesity
A mobile team for adult obesity has also been developed. She is currently in Lamotte-Beuvron, to meet the needs as closely as possible in areas where there are no dietitians and very little adapted physical education. “If we find professionals locally, we integrate them into our team, adds the director. To create dynamics on site, we want to intervene in Sologne, Vallée du Cher and Beauce. We also plan to move towards disability, and also develop a mobile teen team in partnership with schools, to reach young people but also their parents who cook at home. »
Finally, Théraé welcomes more and more patients with complex obesity (up to 5 at the same time), that is to say weighing more than 200 kg. And for which the health system is not adapted. The challenge is first of all to relearn them how to get up, sit down, move around, work on balance in hospitalization, before perhaps moving on to the next stage in day hospitalization.
