Ultimate Land Rover Defender Off-Road Experience in Agafay Desert

The event began at the Casablanca branch of Smeia, where participants, journalists and influencers were transported from Casablanca towards Agafay in the Marrakech region, aboard the Defender range. This first step allowed guests to discover the comfort of the vehicle while testing it on asphalt, even if it is not specially designed for this use.

After a gourmet stopover in the ocher city, the caravan resumes aiming for the Agafay desert. Here we are at our bivouac. A few minutes of rest, and we’re off for our test drive. Before we started, certified Land Rover instructors gave us a briefing highlighting the key aspects of responsible off-road driving to prepare us well for this experience.

Defender 90, compact and bold

We begin our test with the youngest of the family (4m59 in length), the Defender 90. Equipped with a 3.0 L Diesel engine, this iconic 3-door model from the British brand impressed us with its agility. He does everything, and he does it well. To make things easier, we activate the “Rockery” mode recommended by our instructor, as well as the short gearbox to increase the torque available to the wheels while reducing the speed of the vehicle. The 3D panoramic cameras offering a detailed retransmission of all obstacles present on the road, give us additional assistance.

Result: the Defender 90 turned out to be a real little monster. It excels on this rocky and uneven surface with its exceptional maneuverability and controlled nervousness, tackling obstacles with ease thus confirming its status as a compact and agile all-terrain vehicle.

Defender 110, balance and versatility

With an imposing length of 5m02 and a wider wheelbase of 3m02, the Defender 110 embodies the perfect balance between power and comfort. Under the hood of this model which can accommodate up to 7 passengers, we find the same 3.0 Diesel engine as that of the little brother, the Defender 90. This engine has proven to be more than sufficient to easily overcome the steepest slopes of the Agafay region.

Always activating the “Rock” mode, we put the vehicle to the test on an inclination of almost 30 degrees, without the slightest problem. The vehicle’s response was impeccable, illustrating exceptional grip and flawless stability.

Defender 130, the large-format all-terrain vehicle

The Defender 130, the longest member of the range (5m36), is distinguished by its imposing wingspan. Equipped with a 3.0 L Diesel engine, developing 600 Nm of torque, this model revealed slightly reduced responsiveness in terms of power. But it must be said that with its weight exceeding 2.6 tonnes, this is completely normal. You can’t change the laws of physics!

On the other hand, this weight in no way sacrifices its all-terrain qualities. We tested the vehicle in a variety of off-road situations, on quicksand and gravel, steep slopes and huge stones everywhere. Thanks to its generous wheelbase and adjustable suspension, the eldest of the family confidently adapts to any situation with its crossing capacity and improved traction. Driving this car, we really have the impression that this vehicle feels the terrain on which it drives.

To conclude our test, we put this Defender to the test of “sugar loaf”, a pointed rock structure. Here once more, the Defender made short work of this exercise, once once more demonstrating its exceptional versatility and its limitless adventurous spirit.

As for the price, the Defender 90 is offered by Smeia from 850,000 DH, while the Defender 110 starts from 867,500 DH. For those looking for all-terrain excellence in large format, the Defender 130 is available from 1,036,100 DH.
