Supporting Local Producers: The Rise of Cooperatives in Charleroi

Local cooperatives are popular. In Charleroi for example, a supermarket selling local products has just opened its doors and in just a few hours, some shelves were already empty. “With everything going on right now, it’s a good idea. To support farmers and local producers“, explains a customer.

Among the 80 producers represented in the cooperative, most are Hennuyers. “The idea is really to create a dynamic, a local economy that makes sense, with values, customer service, transparency, an investment for a close and united economy.“, explains Céline Debisschop, the store manager. And the customers seem won over.”It’s a little more expensive, but at least we know what we have on our plate. When I see the meat that is there, I am not afraid, it is not meat spiked with hormones“.

Élise, a farmer from the region, produces wheat 20 kilometers from the store and for her, selling her artisanal pasta in this store is a game changer compared to supermarkets. “Here, we calculate our own margin ourselves whereas for a large store we must go through a purchasing center which already takes its margin from our profit and which takes its margin once more when placing it in store“, declares the farmer.

The cooperative therefore makes it possible to reduce the number of intermediaries and to set a “fair” price. “If I go through a purchasing center, I put 20 cents in my pocket, going through this type of cooperative or selling in farm stores, I put 50 cents in my pocket, so that’s already a lot more remunerative“.
