Navalny’s mother visited grave in Moscow

Lyudmila Navalnaya appeared in the morning, accompanied by her son’s mother-in-law, at the gravesite covered with flowers and wreaths at the Borisovskoye cemetery in southern Moscow. On Friday, thousands of people said goodbye to Navalny, who died two weeks earlier in a penal colony in the Arctic.

Mourners lined up for hours on Friday to say goodbye to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s most prominent opponent. Navalny’s mother also attended the funeral on Friday. On Saturday, journalists from the AFP news agency saw only a few visitors laying flowers at Navalny’s grave. Police remained present at the cemetery near the banks of the Moskva River.

The widow and children stayed away

The opposition politician’s widow, Yulia Navalnaya, the couple’s two children and Navalny’s brother live abroad and did not attend the funeral. Navalnaya had announced that she would continue her husband’s work and accused Putin of killing Navalny.

On Friday, the crowd gathered chanted slogans such as “No to war” and “We will not forgive!” chanted. According to the human rights organization OVD-Info, Russian police arrested at least 128 people across the country on Friday who had taken part in commemorations for Navalny in 19 cities.
