Germany launches investigation into high-level military communications suspected to have been eavesdropped by Russia
02.03.2024
Has Russia eavesdropped on conversations among senior German military officials regarding the deployment of Taurus missiles in Ukraine? An investigation is underway in Germany. The incident shocked German politicians. Green Party member Knotts pointed out that the key question is whether this is a one-time incident or a structural safety issue. Some politicians believe that Russia has special intentions in this move.
(Deutsche Welle Chinese website) A spokesman for the German Ministry of Defense said that they are investigating “whether air force communications have been monitored.” The Military Counterintelligence Service has “taken all necessary measures.”
Structural problem?
Politicians from the Greens and the Coalition have expressed concern over reports that Russia may have monitored internal conversations of senior German military officials regarding the Taurus cruise missile. Green Party MP Konstantin von Notz said in an interview with German media: “If the reports are true, this will be a very difficult incident… The question is whether this is a one-time incident or a structural safety issue.” He added “I would like all the background information to be clarified immediately,” he said.
CDU defense politician Roderich Kiesewetter warned that more conversations might come to light. In an interview with a German news program, he said: “There must have been other conversations that were monitored and may be exposed in the future when it is beneficial to Russia.” He said: “It can be considered that Russia deliberately leaked the content of the conversation at this time with special intentions .” This purpose can only be to “prevent Germany from providing Taurus missiles.”
Statement by the German Chancellor
German Chancellor Scholz (Social Democratic Party) announced a “rapid” investigation into the matter. He said: “What is being reported is a very serious matter. So we will investigate this matter very carefully, very deeply and very quickly, as necessary.” Earlier this week,He once explained in detail the reasons for refusing to provide “Taurus” missiles to Ukraine. For a long time, Ukraine has been urging Germany to provide “Taurus” missiles. This kind of missile is launched in the air by a fighter jet, and the missile’s own jet braking system allows it to have a range of more than 500 kilometers, and the explosion has strong penetrating power. Ukraine stated that they hope to obtain such missiles in order to destroy logistics support systems, ammunition depots and military bases in Russian-occupied areas. Although there are many politicians in the ruling coalition who support the provision of Taurus missiles to Ukraine, German Chancellor Scholz made this decision once morest all odds.
Scholz said that Ukraine’s use of Taurus missiles would require German soldiers to participate in targeting, and he was worried that this would indirectly involve Germany in the war in Ukraine. However, politicians from coalition partners the Greens and the FDP clearly support supplying Ukraine with such missiles. The day when the media reported that the internal conversations of German military officers were suspected to have been monitored, it happened to be the same day that many media reportedMasalek, a former executive at Wirecard, an online payment technology service provider(Jan Marsalek) worked for Russian intelligence on the same day for many years. Many German-language media, such as Germany’s Der Spiegel, ZDF, Austria’s Standard, and other media cited Western intelligence information and pointed out that the mysterious former Wirecard executive has close ties with the Russian intelligence agency GRU and Duma members. . These connections existed as early as 2014.
