Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that the killing of a number of victims, including a child and a two-year-old infant, in a Russian drone attack on Saturday might have been avoided if Ukraine had not faced delays in delivering weapons supplies.

Rescue personnel recovered eight bodies from under the rubble and were still searching for more late Saturday evening.

Zelensky said in a post on the Telegram application earlier Saturday: “Russia continues to fight civilians… One of the enemy’s marches struck a residential building in Odessa. It destroyed 18 apartments.”

Oleh Kiper, the governor of the region, said that among the dead were three men, aged 35, 40 and 54, and two women, aged 31 and 73. He added that the number of injured people reached eight, including a three-year-old girl.

“Delaying the supply of weapons and missile defense systems to Ukraine to protect our people unfortunately leads to such losses,” he added in his video evening speech.

Smoke rose from the rubble scattered on the ground at the site where the drone destroyed a large part of the multi-storey building.

Clothes and furniture appeared scattered among the destroyed concrete and iron blocks hanging from the side of the damaged residential building.

The Ukrainian State Emergency Service published photos, including one showing rescuers placing the body of a young child inside a body bag.

A caption accompanying the photo said, “It is impossible to forget! It is impossible to forgive.” The emergency service said that five people, including a child, were rescued alive.

According to Zelensky, the Iranian-made “Shahed” drone was an Iranian-made drone. Russia launched several thousand of these long-range drones throughout the war on targets deep in Ukraine.
