First reading

Ex 20, 1-17

In those days, the Lord promulgated these precepts to his people on Mount Sinai, saying: “I am the Lord, your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt and slavery. You will have no other gods besides me; You shall not make for yourself idols or any images of what is above, in heaven, or below, on the earth, or in the water, or under the earth. You shall not worship any of these nor serve them, for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me; But I am merciful to the thousandth generation of those who love me and keep my commandments.

You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not leave anyone who misuses his name unpunished.

Remember to keep the Sabbath holy. Six days you will work and in them you will do all your chores; But the seventh day is a day of rest, dedicated to the Lord your God. You shall not do any work there, neither you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male or female slave, nor your animals, nor the stranger who lives with you. For in six days the Lord made heaven, earth, sea, and everything in them, but on the seventh day he rested. That is why the Lord blessed the Sabbath and sanctified it.

Honor your father and mother so that you may live long years in the land that the Lord, your God, is going to give you. Thou shalt not kill. You shall not commit adultery. Thou shalt not steal. You shall not bear false witness once morest your neighbor. You shall not covet your neighbor’s house, nor his wife, nor his male slave, nor his female slave, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that belongs to him.’ Second lecture

Reading of the first letter of the apostle Saint Paul to the Corinthians

1 Cor 1, 22-25

Brothers: The Jews demand miraculous signs and the pagans ask for wisdom. But we preach Christ crucified, which is a scandal to the Jews and madness to the pagans; On the other hand, for those who are called, whether Jews or pagans, Christ is the strength and wisdom of God. For the folly of God is wiser than the wisdom of men, and the weakness of God is stronger than the strength of men.
