Revolutionizing Emergency Response: How Brussels Firefighters Leverage Phone Cameras for Faster, Safer Interventions

This is a novelty that might well help the Brussels firefighters. They can now ask a caller to give them access to the phone’s camera, to check the situation and make a more precise assessment of the situation.

Concretely, if you call the fire brigade, your call will be handled by an operator. The latter will take the address and basic information, before transferring you to a second operator. He is the one who will check, first-hand, what is happening.

Concretely, if help is sent at the end of the first stage, this second phase will facilitate interventions. The operator will send you an SMS, which contains a link. The latter gives access to your camera. The agent will check that the connection is sufficient and that the battery is sufficiently charged, before activating the camera and having a visual of the location affected by the incident. “We have access to its exact location, so we know where to send relief and this allows us to adapt, send more resources or specific resources to that location,” explains Walter Derieuw, Spokesperson for the Brussels Fire Brigade.

Instructions can then be given to have an overview of the place affected by the fire. “We ask you to tilt your phone, to see the top of the building, then to the left or right, to see if there are any additional dangers”, confirms Walter Derieuw. All, obviously, without the caller putting himself in danger in any way. There is, of course, no way to access your phone without you giving permission.

The Brussels firefighters are the first to have the right to use such a device in Belgium. This is already happening elsewhere, abroad.
