Political Turmoil in Pakistan: Prime Minister Elections Amid Economic Crisis

Islamabad: Elections for the post of Prime Minister tomorrow in Pakistan, which is going through a political and economic crisis. Former prime minister Shahbaz Sharif, who is a candidate with the support of Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz faction (PML-N) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), has the upper hand in the election. The challenger is Omar Ayub Khan who was nominated by Sunni Ittihad Council Chairman Sahibzada Hameed Raza with the support of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Party (PTI). The newly elected MNAs elect the Prime Minister through voting.

Shahbaz Sharif has the support of six parties including former foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. Shahbaz was nominated by his brother Nawaz Sharif. Candidates can submit their nomination papers till 2 pm today.

Pakistan’s 16th National Assembly was sworn in on Thursday amid allegations of fraudulent voting in the general election. Outgoing Speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf administered the oath. Out of total 336 members, 302 MNAs took oath.
