It is known that both Ford and General Motors need to create a large range of electric vehicles (EV) to compete with Tesla.
However, Tesla may not be its main competitor in regarding a year. Volkswagen might end up as the world leader in electric vehicles, surpassing Tesla and the rest of the industry.
InsideEVs recently reported that Volkswagen sold 310,000 electric vehicles in Europe last year, compared to 170,000 for Tesla. Given Volkswagen’s extensive presence in Europe, that differential has likely improved in the German automaker’s favor.
However, Volkswagen has not had a significant sales footprint in the United States. However, if it can come to market with a wide range of electric vehicles before American car companies, that might change.
Volkswagen’s financial arsenal is such that it can match, if not surpass, GM and Ford in capital costs to make electric vehicles. It faces the same microchip shortage as everyone else, so it’s possible that none of them might have explosive sales for months.
According to the InsideEVs site, Bloomberg Intelligence believes that Volkswagen will end up at the top of the electric vehicle pyramid. If that’s true, the investments GM and Ford have made will generate modest returns at best.
