Mingob confirms seizure of Q181 million worth of cocaine in Coatepeque, Quetzaltenango
On Wednesday, February 28, authorities found almost two tons of cocaine in two trucks 34 kilometers from the border with Mexico.
An operation led by the General Subdirectorate of Analysis of Anti-Narcotics Information (Sgaia), managed to seize 1,761 kilograms of a cocaine-positive substance, in 1,497 packages that were distributed in two trucks.
The illegal acts were located in the Magnolia subdivision, zone 6 of Coatepeque, 34 kilometers from the border with Mexico.
According to the authorities, the drug shipment was hidden in a double bottom in the roof of the vans, so the agents had to break the structure to access the site.
On several of the packages the word Supreme is read with a logo that simulates that of Air Jordan; Other packages are marked with the word Jordan and have a logo similar to that brand, while other packages have a photograph of a car.
Two people suspected of being in charge of the shipment were arrested at the scene. The Government authorities attribute the seizure as an achievement, which would be among the largest ever made.
According to Mingob, the operation allowed one of the largest seizures in the country’s recent history, and is the product of the actions of the Territorial Control Plan, with which the minister, Francisco Jiménez, seeks to eradicate organized and transnational crime.
The shipment is equivalent to Q180 million 928 thousand 221.75 according to the appraisal made by the Ministry of the Interior.
The drugs were transferred from Coatepeque to the Sgaia warehouses, where they remain insured pending the court order for their incineration.
