They captured her in various moments, sometimes official, sometimes more everyday and others with her people as protagonists. At the same time, nine writers also captured the image of the city, but with their own means: words. Photos and texts were combined, creating a 192-page album, which outlines the identity of Thessaloniki in the 21st century.
This is the collective photo album entitled “Eternal Thessaloniki”, which was released on the initiative of the Cultural Society of Businessmen of Northern Greece and was presented, yesterday followingnoon, at the “Xanthippi Hoipel” Amphitheater of the MOMus – Museum of Contemporary Art.
“Energy is produced when different things come together. This album comes from synergies of people who belong to different areas” said, during the presentation, the president of the Cultural Society of Entrepreneurs of Northern Greece, Stavros Andreadis. “Look at it with great care, because each photo has a little story to tell you” he invited the hundreds of people who suffocated the hall, at the same time declaring that he was proud of the result.
The specific initiative of the Cultural Society comes as a continuation of an earlier successful edition, entitled “Thessaloniki, A City of People”. But as it was pointed out during the presentation, since then both the city and the people have changed, as well as the technical means that photographers now use. The recent venture is an honest and realistic presentation of the city and a depiction of all aspects and perspectives of modern Thessaloniki, attempted for the first time.
“The album reminds us how the small image quietly manifests itself within the frame of the large one, in an era when the declared diversity and the distinct alternative make up a colorful and heterogeneous whole” emphasized the curator and head of the Collections Department of the MOMus-Museum of Photography of Thessaloniki Iraklis Papaioannou , who edited the edition together with Evdoxia Radi. He also underlined the continuous levels of contrast that one can distinguish when flipping through the album – “from the dull look of old age, to the photogenic youthful kiss of the festival of colors”, he said among other examples.
With a more cinematic look – due to her professional and scientific occupation, the journalist and film historian Lina Mylonaki commented on the album, who contributes a text to the publication. “The photographs collected in this album challenge time and stop it to capture the moment. After all, the lens, whether cinematic or photographic, is perfectly designed for this” he emphasized, answering the question that arises from the title of the album “Eternal Thessaloniki”, regarding how the eternity of a city, existing and living for centuries, can be attributed. in photo frames.
Finally, the writer Isidoros Zourgos, who is among the nine people of the city who wrote original texts especially for the publication, underlined the power of images and how each of them can inspire … a thousand words. “For a man of writing, this particular collection might be the starting point for the birth of many short stories or even novels,” he said characteristically. “Photographs ultimately carry stories and stories tick images,” he noted, attempting to describe his sense of “harmonies of words and images.”
