Hearse drivers refuse to take Navalny’s body to funeral in Moscow, team of Putin critic says
Attempts to hire a hearse to transport the body of Russian opponent Alexey Navalny to his funeral in Moscow have been thwarted by unknown people, the late politician’s team reported this Thursday.
Spokeswoman Kira Yarmysh said the drivers were “called by unknown people and threatened not to take Alexey’s body anywhere.”
According to Yarmysh, she was told that “no hearse agrees to take the body there.”
Navalny’s team also had difficulties renting a venue for his funeral, which will be held at 2:00 p.m. local time (6 a.m. Miami time) this Friday at the Church of the Icon of the Mother of God in the Maryino district of Moscow, where Navalny lived. He will then be buried at the Borisov cemetery.
Many places claimed they were already booked for that date or refused booking once Navalny’s name was mentioned, while one site explicitly said they were prohibited from working with the dead opposition leader’s team, Yarmysh said Tuesday.
Navalny’s team initially planned a public farewell and funeral for this Thursday, but was informed that “there were no cemetery workers available who might dig a grave,” Ivan Zhdanov, head of Navalny’s Anti-Corruption Foundation, said Wednesday.
